In the article is discussed why it is important to allocate space to the students’ personal meaning-making activity in the history curriculum and invite students to reflect on the personal meaning of the object of study to themselves. The question is approached using the categories of first-, second-, and third-order concepts where the third-order concepts draw attention to the student’s meaning-giving activity regarding history. The empirical analysis in the paper is based on an analysis of the current National Core Curriculum. The text is analysed from the point of what space is given there to student’s own meaning-giving in the context of history teaching. In the paper are also reported the results of a survey where Grade 8 students were asked how they see the general importance of, and their personal interest in selected activities in the history classroom.
