This article describes the redesigning of the Creative Steps 2.0 model through design research towards a creative and authentic learning environment. The aim is to understand collaborative and creative knowledge construction in online interactions in the context of learning for innovation. The ever-changing world of work challenges the development of educational practices to meet the needs of working life, and innovation knowledge is identified as a force for societal development. The course Innovations and Entrepreneurship was examined with the help of content analysis in an inductive and abductive manner in the University of Applied Sciences through students’ experiences, perceptions and activities on virtual walls. For the analysis, features of collaborative and creative knowledge construction in online interactions were formed considering previous research. The study found that the Creative Steps 2.0 model promotes online knowledge construction, which requires platforms that support innovation process where students have an equal opportunity to participate. The importance of a creative atmosphere is recognised, which can be facilitated by collective agreements between groups. Based on students’ experiences and perceptions, online work skills are perceived as important for working life, and students feel that the skills they have learned can be applied to working life. The results reveal enabling and challenging factors for online interaction. Recommendations from collaborative and creative online knowledge construction for the development of the Creative Steps 2.0 model are provided. The results of the study can be applied to support creative knowledge construction and innovation skills in online studies.
