Author Guidelines

OBS! Manuscripts will not be accepted on a regular basis but only by CFPs, see here for the current CFP and timetable.

Joutsen / Svanen. Special Issues is a series of thematic issues on Finnish literature published alongside Joutsen / Svanen. Yearbook of Finnish Literary Research. The articles are peer-reviewed. At the editorial board's discretion, Special Issues may also include, for example, essays. The publication is multilingual, and submissions can be made in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Proposals for individual articles and other texts can be made based on the CFP. Manuscripts for Special Issues should be sent to the editors, as a rule, via this website.

Reference policy

Joutsen / Svanen articles follow the scientific citation policy, i.e. previous research must be considered and referenced in a standard scientific manner. The guideline length for an article is 35,000– 45,000 characters including spaces and for a literature review 7,000– 10,000 characters including spaces. The length of other texts will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Basic Formatting

Texts are written in Times New Roman font (point size 12). Line spacing is 1.5. Lines do not need to be justified. Headings are separated from the body text by a blank line above and below. Bolding or underlining is not used to emphasise headings or words in the body text. Footnotes can be added using Word’s automatic reference function.

Names and abbreviations of works

The titles of works are placed in italics. The titles of short stories and poems are put in double quotation marks.  Titles of works that are referred to more than once are given an acronym consisting of the first letters of the words in the work’s title (e.g. Rich, Skinny and Beautiful = RLK or RLJK). The acronym is introduced when the work is mentioned for the first time and is used in future to refer to the work.

Guidelines for References

In-text citations are used in articles. References are given in the form (Surname year: page number). If the reference covers a single sentence, the clause containing the reference in parentheses is part of the sentence and a full stop is placed outside it. Alphabetic characters (e.g., see, cf., mt. and mp.) can be used in references.

List of References

The bibliography is divided into separate lists of primary and secondary sources. Sources are listed in alphabetical order by author’s surname and, where appropriate, works by the same author are listed from earliest to latest. Publications by the same author in the same year are distinguished in the references and in the list of resources by alphabetical order (Laakso 1992a, Laakso 1992b).

Lists of References are entitled Primary Sources and Secondary Sources.

Monographs are cited as follows:

Beller, Manfred & Joep Leerssen 2007: Imagology: The Cultural Construction and Literary Representation of National Characters. Amsterdam & New York: Rodopi.

The articles published in collections of articles or as separate parts of a book are cited as follows:

Lyytikäinen, Pirjo 2003: “The Allure of Decadence: French Reflections in a Finnish Looking Glass.” In Pirjo Lyytikäinen (ed.), Changing Scenes: Encounters between European and Finnish Fin de Siècle. Helsinki: Finnish Literature Society, Studia Fennica Litteraria 1, 12–30.

Titles of journals are italicised:

Abbott, H. Porter 2008: “The Art of Making It New, Revisited: Beckett and Cliché.” Poetics Today, Fall 2008 29(3), 595–601, https://doi.org/10.1215/03335372-077.

For digital sources, the aim is to provide the permanent address (URL) of the publication. If this is not possible, please add the date when the material was retrieved online.

If the source has a DOI number, this should be indicated, leaving out any other online sources (this applies both to electronic and non-digital sources). In the case of an electronic publication, the DOI number can be found in the context of the publication. You can check whether the source has a DOI at https://www.crossref.org. In the search field, enter the title of the publication or the author, for example, and click on the "Search metadata" button. In the bibliography, the DOI is listed in the following format: https://doi.org/10.23978/inf.68907.
