Joutsen-Svanen, Further Guidelines for Book Reviews

Joutsen-Svanen, The Yearbook of Finnish Literary Research, publishes critical reviews of recently published books in the field of literary study, mainly research on Finnish literature. Monographs, compilations, doctoral theses as well as hand books are accepted for review. The length of the reviews is between 7000 and 10 000 signs, with Times New Roman, 12-point font size and 1.5 line spacing. Besides critical reviews, the yearbook also publishes review articles offering a broad, critical overview of the topic of the book in question. Review articles can be up to 20 000 signs.

The aim of the review is to

  • provide readers with a concise but comprehensive description of the contents and the organization of the book.
  • examine and assess the central thesis of the book as well as its main ideas and objectives.
  • comment critically and constructively on the merits and limitations of the work.
  • evaluate the qualities and the scientific value of the book, especially its contribution to the field of literary study.

Following questions can be addressed:

  • What are the main ideas and objectives, how well have they been presented and accomplished?
  • To what extent are the central approaches and assertions successful or problematic?
  • How is the book related to and how does it supplement current work on the topic? How is it different from other books on the topic?
  • What are the book’s most important contributions?

Assessments and evaluations are based on evidence and illustrated by examples and quotes. Provide the review with a title. The title is followed by the following information: author of the book, year of publication, full title, place of publication, publisher, and number of pages. Include a brief biographical statement after your name (name of reviewer, title, institution, e-mail address).
