Most studies in stylistics have concentrated on one language at a time, even if the texts were translations. On the other hand, much of translational stylistics has been concerned either with identifying translators’ individual styles or limited itself to situational variation. There seems to be no stable methodology for assessing the stylistic adequacy of a translation. In this article I briefly examine how the usual techniques of stylistic analysis apply to a bilingual corpus, and propose the concept of “frame” as a methodological aid for bounding the textual context in which stylistic match should be attained.
