Abstract

The article deals with features of the speaker’s lexicon during court interpretation. The study is based on transcripts of authentic interpreter-mediated court investigations that were analyzed using a corpus approach. The analysis of the data shows that interpreters strive to be loyal to the situation in which conversation takes place and to the juridical macrocontext. This might lead to a wrong understanding of the identity (personality) of the speaker by the recipient. Overemphasizing the features of speakers’ idiolect, again, might lead to a major misrepresentation of the information included in the source message. The interpreter’s endeavor of using special legal terms might also complicate the communication process.
