Abstrakti

This article examines the symposia organized by the University of Vaasa Research Group for Translation, LSP and Multilingualism (VAKKI) as a community of translation and interpreting researchers during 1981–2014. The main research questions are: (1) What kind of a role has translation and interpreting research had in the development of the VAKKI association spanning over 30 years, and (2) in what way are the “turns” of translation research visible in the context of VAKKI? The focus is on the VAKKI Symposium organizers’ choices of plenary speakers and symposium themes, as well as on the section articles representing the “field’s” reactions to the organizers’ choices. The material consists of 33 volumes that contain articles based on presentations given at the annual VAKKI Symposia. The material is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by mapping the relationship between articles representing translation and interpreting research and other articles, as well as by identifying the central developments. The conclusions suggest that translation and interpreting research has had a constant role in VAKKI and that the “turns” of translation studies are visible in the material, although their onset is usually delayed.
