Abstrakti

This article analyses the Finnish extreme right and its activities during the Cold War. The focus is on the inner politics of the extreme right, i.e. strategy building and tactical choices made within parties and groups. Analysis is conducted on the basis of manifestos and other works the representatives of extreme right have produced. So far it has been assumed that the Finnish extreme right did not have any influence within Finnish politics and was effectively put outside the political sphere after 1945. It is true that the special relationship with the Soviet Union kept neo-fascists and other similar groups at bay. However, the “ostracism” Piero Ignazi mentions in this context was not as rigid as one might expect, and, unlike generally assumed, there were fascists and other extremist movements which were acting even surprisingly publicly, although more often they were clandestine by nature. The extreme right was definitely a marginal phenomenon, but not non-existent: current estimates about the number of extreme right members and supporters in Finland today vary around 100 people. Extremist organizations had about the same amount of activists in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
