Abstrakti

Studies of media frames and narratives can give means to understand the popularity of Eurosceptic discourses throughout the Europe. This study analysed over 300 newspaper articles and investigated what kind of rational or irrational bans EU has been reported to pose according to three major Finnish newspapers during the first two decades of Finland’s EU membership. At first, the prevalence of five news frames was investigated in a quantitative frame analysis, after which the language used in the EU reporting was studied in detail. The differences between tabloid newspaper and serious newspapers was clear both in framing and also in the content and style of EU related news. Serious newspapers (Helsingin Sanomat and Savon Sanomat) used health and environmental advantages as well as economic threat frames in the presentation of EU related news most often, whereas cultural threat frame dominated in the tabloid newspaper (Ilta-Sanomat). The language and metaphors used in the tabloid newspaper also differed from standard EU reporting of serious newspapers. In the tabloid newspaper the EU was ridiculed regularly in funny and grotesque stories for posing silly and petty rules that formed a threat to unique Finnish way of life
