Abstract

As a continuation of the Marx renaissance of the 1960’s the second Marx renaissance of the 1970’s adopted the task of developing the theory of the state employing the theoretical concepts and method of Marx. A conference on this theme was arranged in Turku, Finland, in April 1980. The output of the conference is published here as a collection of closely related papers approaching the same problem area from different perspectives. Heikki Paloheimo delineates the historical background of the present scientific discussion of the Marxian theory of the state and identifies the major schools of thought. Sakari Hänninen makes an attempt to systematize the discussion by distinguishing different levels of analysis related among other things to the objects, motives and directions of the present endeavours to derive the state. Raimo Blom surveys and evaluates the development of the Staatsableitung discussion in the Federal Republic of Germany. The main argument by the fourth contributor, Erkki Berndtson, is that the Marxian and bourgeois theoretical traditions are both useful or even necessary points of departure in the attemts to develop the materialistic theory of the state further. Pertti Hynynen reviews the Italian debate and points out some particular traits of the theoretical and political fragmentation of the Italian labour movement.
