Abstract

The Italian feminist movement wished to redefine the masculine concept of politics as activity in the public sphere by introducing the slogan ’the personal is political’. The feminists focussed their attention on the creation of a new political culture among women to create a contrast to masculine politics, which were seen as authoritarian and power-orientated politics. At a first glance the first feminist writings tell us little about that ’masculine’ which was denied, but rather concentrated on a search for that new, positive ’feminine’ that was to form the basis of a political culture among women. In this article some of the first papers produced by the Italian feminist movement are examined in order to explore the concept of the ’masculine’ in Italian feminism. It is against this background that the dimensions of the feminist thesis that ’the personal is political’ are disucssed.
