Abstract

The individual is not the point of departure of politics. Politics is not an intercourse between individuals, for the intercourse is in every respect before the individual. In a sense politics ends with the individual. It takes place only in community. However, this community of the political, is not, for example, a community of citizens or of men. For every community which unites human beings to the one humanity, fuses singular wills to the one general will, signifies destruction of the very possibility of politics. The political community is not a fusion of its parts, for it is nothing but its parts. It is a multiplicity without unity. It is an exposition of the singularities without essence, singularities as they happen. This article examines this event of the political, which, at the same time, is the condition of ethics.
