Abstrakti

The article examines the politics i.e. action and theory of action, and the concept of politics of Association 9, the Finnish women’s movement (1966—1970), the stress being on the significance the movement had on the legitimation and strengthening of the dependence between women and the state. The politics of Association 9 took its function and form from social policy, modifying it to apply to the elimination of the ill-effects of sexual inequality. This was done by an attempt to make women conform to the notion that to be a human being meant conforming to a male norm of bahaviour. The politics of the movement, defined as »apolitical», »rational» and »collective», set the maxim of cooperation for men and women in the struggle for equality. In this process, the legitimation of sexual conflict as a divisive factor in society was explicitly denied. On the basis of the idea that individual and state interests concur, the state, seen as a neutral, impartial representative of the people as a whole, was assigned by Association 9 to mediate sexual conflict and to defend the rights of women.
