Abstract

The article contains a critical examination of the conventional pluralist model of mass participation. It is common among political scientists to focus on citizens’ political participation as an input to the political system. The importance of output-control has been too often overlooked. Citizens are perhaps not very keen on participating in the daily routines of the party organizations, but they are nowadays more able and also more willing than perhaps ever before to evaluate the quality of political outputs — and react accordingly.
