Abstract

Modern industrial building: The Metsä-Pietilä industrial estate in Lahti and the issue of its preservation

The industrial estate of Metsä-Pietilä in Lahti was founded in the mid-1960s by the welding machine manufacturer Kemppi Oy. Around the same time the City of Lahti decided to establish its central warehouse and workshop in the area. Later, the oil burner specialist Oilon Oy and the transport operator Koiviston Auto Oy also installed their businesses in the Metsä-Pietilä estate. Metsä-Pietilä is an example of post-war industrial architecture that landed in Lahti, an old factory town, as late as the 1950s and 1960s, a time when many new industrial estates were established in the town. The Metsä-Pietilä buildings were primarily designed by two offices, Jorma Vuorela Architects and its successors, and Reijo Louhimo Architects. There are also buildings designed by the Lahti City property development department. The relatively coherent, high-level architecture, the green landscape, local designers and high-profile businesses have created a unique built environment in the Metsä-Pietilä estate.
