Abstract

From emotionally loaded images to stories: Analysing the dramaturgy of televised football matches

The article examines the significance of emotionally loaded images, such as close-ups and slow motion replays in the dramatization of televised football matches, as well as in the making of an affective bond between spectators and performers. The article argues that emotionally loaded images not only increase the feelings of suspense and identification of spectators but also educate spectators’ bodily experiences and strengthen performers’ (players, coaches) camera-consciousness on the pitch. The key arguments are summarized by pondering the connections between the gendered presentation of emotions and the commodification of football. The arguments are contextualized by scrutinizing the history of the telecasting of the FIFA World Cup. The main data consists of television broadcasts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa aired by Finnish Broadcasting Company.
