Abstract

Making and enjoying coffee is an essential part of Finnish everyday life. After World War II, coffee making by filtration became more common decade after decade, and automatic coffee machines also entered the consumer market in the 1950s. The article examines the modernization of homes through coffee-making practices from the beginning of the 1950s to the end of the 1970s, by which time the consumption of pan coffee had fallen sharply in Finland. The article is based on advertisements for coffee, filters and coffee machines, as well as articles published on coffee in Finnish newspapers and magazines. It analyzes the collection of digitized periodicals of the National Library of Finland both quantitatively and qualitatively from the perspective of coffee drinking.
