Abstract

Ministry of the Interior ordered in  1943 that extinguishing water supply sources shall be marked with signposts with red letter V placed at 1.5 meters from ground. Construction of extinguishing water supply wells was due to fire legislation from year 1933, which had requirements for adequate supplies for extinguishing water. Fire hydrants connected to municipal water supply pipe network, marked with small signs depicting a hydrant wrench, have displaced separate water wells with V-signposts, buth the signposts still exist by the roadside all over Finland.
