Large museum machines
Vol. 39 No. 1 (2021)The industrialized world is full of machines of a wast variety of forms and sizes. Humanity has imagined machines for all kinds of work with increasing pace as automatization increases. Maxchines are now an integral part of society and our common cultural heritage. Meanwhile, museums are filled with typewriters, radios, and other everyday gadgets. Large machines, however, present a tall task to heritage work. How can they be preserved as artefacts of our technological era? How are these machines used to convey ideas about industrial heritage and about its preservers? When and why is the conservation or restauration of a large machine timely, and what should one keep in mind? These issues are discussed in this special issue of Tekniikan Waiheita that engages the history of technology community with an ongoing, lively, and international discussion in the museums sector.

Media archaeology – between new and old media
Vol. 37 No. 3 (2019)Yli kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten lankapuhelin oli yksi tärkeimmistä kodin mediavälineistä. Perheissä veivattavalla numerolautasella tai näppäimillä varustettu muovinen pömpeli sijoitettiin usein eteiskäytävälle erilliselle puhelinpöydälle. Älykännyköiden ja mobiilimedian aikakaudella lankapuhelin ja muut tuon ajan laitteet, koneet, ohjelmasovellukset sekä käyttöesineet edustavat mennyttä käyttökulttuuria, jota muistellaan usein katkeransuloiseen sävyyn. Media-arkeologia pyrkii vastamaan tästä vuorovaikutuksista syntyviin kysymyksiin, ja muistuttamaan että nykyisestä uudesta mediasta tulee hyvinkin nopeasti vanhaa.

Technologies of war and preparedness
Vol. 37 No. 2 (2019)Sodankäyntiin on aina kuulunut monenlaista teknologiaa itse aseista ja linnoituksista joukkojensiirtovälineisiin ja huoltojärjestelmiin. Sodan muutos on sidoksissa teknologian kehitykseen, teollistumiseen ja yhteiskunnan teknologiaa koskeviin käsityksiin. Sodan koskettaessa koko yhteiskuntaa siviilien ja infrastruktuurin suojelu sekä yhteiskunnan toimintakyky näyttäytyvät tärkeinä turvallisuuskysymyksinä omine teknologisine ulottuvuuksineen. Silti kaikista uusista sotateknologioista ei tule ratkaisua koettuihin uhkakuviin eikä uusi teknologia noin vain korvaa jo käytössä olevaa. Kaikki hankinnat eivät myöskään onnistu, minkä takia improvisaatiolla ja niukkuuden hallinnalla on merkityksensä sotateknologioiden kehityksessä.
Yksityinen tai julkinen sotateollisuus on olennainen sodankäynnin edellytys. Sen ja sotavoimien välille muodostuu monenlaisia hallinnan ja vuorovaikutuksen sidoksia niin rauhan kuin sodan aikana. Teknologian ja tuotannon taustalla häämöttävät tiede ja tuotekehitys sitovat yliopistot, ajatushautomot ja laboratoriot osaksi sodan teknologisia verkostoja. Aseita, sotakoneita ja -järjestelmiä koskevien aikalaiskokemusten pelkistyminen arkkityyppisiksi kertomuksiksi tuottaa yhteisöllisesti jaettuja selviytymiskertomuksia traumaattisista kokemuksista hämärtäen näin sodan teknologisen muutoksen yhteiskunnallista vaikutusta.

The many stories in history of technology
Vol. 37 No. 1 (2019)Tekniikan Waiheita volume 37 celebrates the inaugural year of open access online publication for the journal – the sole remaining Nordic one in history of technology. Number 37:1 opens up the wide field of history of technology in Finland with academic research, cultural heritage and museums, and publications. Layout has been tweaked in a number of ways to facilitate the switch to online format.
