Abstract

The present article explores how the concept of voice can be utilized in the teaching of scientific writing. Its aim is to show that the capability to use and orchestrate the different voices forming the text is among the most central skills required to become an adept writer of scientific texts. Firstly, there are the multiple voices that are intertextually called into the text as part of an argument; it is mandatory to denote both the boundaries and the sources for all of these in a rigorous way. Secondly, there are the many voices of the author himself or herself: as a voice of its own, as the narrator, and as the implied author of the text. Both of these layers of abstraction should be taken into account in the teaching of scientific writing.
