Abstract

The functions of the soil microflora in its relation to the growth of agricultural crops are discussed under the following aspects: 1) Decomposition of organic matter and release of plant nutrients. 2) Synthesis of microbial cell substance and its bearing upon humus formation and soil structure. 3) Formation by the soil and rhizosphere flora of specific substances (growth compounds or antibiotics) that may influence the metabolism of the plant or determine its susceptibility to attack by pathogenic organisms.
