Abstract

Home economics have been an object of study only in the last few decades and consequently the basic concepts and terminology in the field have still to be finally determined and clarified. As uniformity in the terminology in different countries would be of advantage for research work in this field as well as in practical life, it would be desirable that collaboration to this end could be brought about. In different connections the question of what is or should be understood by home economics has been raised. The point has been discussed e.g. by EGNER (1952) and DUBBERKE (1958). In the Finnish literature there are only a few references to the matter (HARMAJA 1946, SAURIO 1938, SAURIO 1947). – The present writer has come to the conclusion that home economics involve a unit formed by one or more persons, the object of its economic action being to create a possibility of satisfying immediate human needs within the limits of private economy. As the results of the production of home economics are used within the limits of the same economic unit, an analysis of their profitableness meets with considerable difficulties. However, in view of the importance of the matter to private as well as national economy, special means for proving the »return» yielded by home economics, i.e. its profitableness, should be evolved.
