Hope-Action Theory, hope, career guidance, adult guidance, lifelong guidanceAbstract
The purpose of this shorter writing is to highlight hope and its significance as part of career guidance. Hope does not arise merely from wishing that things will go well; rather, it requires active and conscious effort. The Hope-Action Theory is a framework that can be utilized to support career and educational planning. At the core of the theory is hope, along with the competencies that strengthen self-reflection, self awareness, envisioning, planning and goal setting, implementation, and adaptation—which can be assessed and developed in career guidance. In Hope-Action Theory, the environment also plays a crucial position, as the agency and competencies of the individual are shaped through interaction with a changing living and working environment. Methods based on this theory can help strengthen individuals’ belief in the future and their sense of hope, which is essential for career development and planning. The theory is applicable both in career guidance situations where the focus is on identifying and reinforcing what is already working well, and in situations involving considerations of retraining or transitions between roles or organizations.
