Abstract

The number of students with different cultural and lingual backgrounds has increased steadily in vocational education in Finland. The aim of this article is to present approaches to cultural encounters and
to examine immigrant students’ and their teachers’ discussion for developing the training. This process is outlined with the concepts of instrumentalities and interculturality, and is called developmental interculturality, in which different cultural practices are studied intentionally and used as a springboard for new ideas. The participants identified, compared, questioned and negotiated different cultural tools. Reciprocal interaction and shared discussion can offer a fruitful instrument to vocational actors for intercultural encounters; challenge is to find courage and time for cultural pondering in everyday life.
