Abstract

The aim of this review is to discuss the needs of different aspects, such as structural development in Finnish education policy, changes in teaching profession, quality of education as well as universities of applied sciences have and to show that qualitative knowledge has been generated and the regional development work leads to results. Our focus is on education and teaching development at the Lohja unit of Laurea University of Applied sciences. The main questions are: What evidence do we have on effectiveness? Which role does the area and different permanent partnerships play for the university unit? And above all, what effect does everything have on teaching, re- newal of the learning environments and especially on the development of students’ know-how and changes in teaching profession? At Laurea University of Applied sciences the pedagogical task, regional development as well as research and development tasks are seen as integrated whole (2003 /351, 4 §). This approach forms the background of learning by de- veloping (LbD)-model. This review presents two regional development projects in our university unit. The key aspects in the work carried out at the University of Applied sciences is that the co-operation with economic life leads to results which are essential for the region and that the students’ learning is work-oriented. Both content-based and qualitative targets of the structural development will be met through committed teachers as well as constructive co-operation between working-life and the university.
