Abstract

Literature review of the cultural-historical activity theory studies outlined a research framework for the ‘third work’ taking place in public and semi-public spaces, such as libraries and commercial premises, located in professional boundaries and interspaces. Pro-fessional activity in borderlines has received less research attention than multi-professional social welfare work. The research question was: What kind of conceptual starting points does the cultural-historical activity theory research provide for the study of so-called third work? Eleven research articles were analyzed by applying theory-based thematization. Thematic areas were named: learning in borders, collaboration, tensions of work management, and communication. In these thematic areas, dynamics of learning were linked to expansive learning, the tensions of collaboration, the mediated nature of interaction, the integration of knowledge bases, structural changes in organizations, and the diversity of actors. As the outcome, the research framework for the third work was sketched.
