Abstract

Independence of time and place has made web-based instruction popular. The learning outcome exceeds that of traditional instruction methods especially when web-based methods are combined with face-to-face instruction. Preparation for fully functional web-based learning often takes more time than the planning required by traditional teaching. Previously, the experiences of health care lecturers have been surveyed in the context of online learning experiments in medicine and nurse training. The purpose of this study was to describe the web-based instruction experiences of lecturers in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Radiography and Radiotherapy, and Oral Hygiene at Finnish universities of applied sciences (UAS). The aim of this study was to produce components for web-based instruction concept. The research question was: How do health care lecturers experience web-based instruction? The data were collected from health care lecturers involved with UAS web-based instruction (n=13) and the tutors of partner UASs (n=3). The informants produced written descriptions of their web-based instruction experiences, and the data were analysed by means of inductive content analysis. The study shows that lecturers find web-based instruction to be challenging. The challenge is associated with the adequacy of pedagogic and technical support and the tension between expectations and results. Causes for dissatisfaction include concern for the students’ learning and the loss of control over one’s work. The high level and variety of challenges involved in the preparation of web-based instruction call for a reorganisation of the web-based instruction process. The results of this study may be used in education development in cooperation with lecturers, UAS management and partners, and in the evolution of the concept of web-based instruction.
