Abstrakti

”The eighteenth century as we imagine it today.“ Adaptation as a Way of Giving Shape to History in Three Novel Dramatizations from the 1970s

Eighteenth-century novels often present themselves as texts between past and future texts, as being based on supposedly authentic documents and likely to be rewritten. This article focuses on three twentienth-century dramatizations which transpose the two-way adaptability in novels by Denis Diderot, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Choderlos de Laclos. The analyses of dramatic texts by Milan Kundera, Ulrich Plenzdorf and Heiner Müller contribute to the on-going debate on the nature of adaptation by showing how the transposi¬tion of metadaptative features not only (re)produce a story but foreground the historical status of the work as well. In addition to change of focus in adaptation studies the article calls forth a wider view of the history of literature as changes on the boundaries between literature and its various others, theatre and film being but two examples of them.
