Abstract

Finnish hunting culture is facing changes due to structural changes in rural areas. This derives potential tensions between those who want to conserve local hunting culture, its rules and practices in opposition to those adapting new practices. Recruitment of new hunters outside local communities becomes evident. In this task hunting associations are in a central role. The study examines hunting associations within a concept of Pierre Bourdieu’s ’field’. The concept of field opens up the logic how hunting associations reproduce their membership. The study focuses on choreographies of entrance and rejection expressed within fields by the candidates. The theory-based analysis is illustrated with interviews conducted among hunters in Central Finland. The study focuses on meaning of social recognition and value attribution given by members of hunting associations. The logic of field creates an analytical frame for understanding social reproduction and sustainability of hunting culture.
