The Finnish Journal of Tourism Research is a multidisciplinary scientific journal published by the Finnish Society for Tourism Research that focuses on tourism, recreation and leisure. The journal publishes peer reviewed articles and review articles (double-blind peer review) and research notes (open peer review) in Finnish, Swedish and English, as well as non-peer reviewed articles in the perspectives and introductory lectures (lectio praecursoria) sections.
Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The manuscript is in Microsoft Word or RTF document format.
- The text uses 1.5 line spacing. The text is written in 12-point Times New Roman font.
- The manuscript has not been previously published or submitted to any other journal for publication (or this has been mentioned in the ‘Comments to the Editor’ section).
- In other respects, the manuscript follows the Author Guidelines provided below.
- The list of references corresponds to the references used in the text. The references and the list of references follow the APA guidelines.

The journal accepts scientific writings on tourism, recreation and leisure for the following sections:

Manuscripts are submitted to the journal through this website.
All articles and review articles are evaluated in a double-blind peer review process. Based on the publication type classification of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, these belong to publication types A1 and A2. Research notes are evaluated by an open review process, and they belong to publication type B1. Other manuscripts are reviewed by the editor-in-chief (or by guest editors in special issues).
An article (original article, research article) is based on research that provides new information. The maximum length for articles is 55,000 characters (incl. spaces, not including references). The instructions for abstracts and manuscript anonymisation are provided below.
A review article (literature review, systematic review) provides a comprehensive overview on a certain topic or phenomenon. A review article analyses existing scientific research using scientific methods. The maximum length for review articles is 45,000 characters (incl. spaces, not including references). The instructions for abstracts and manuscript anonymisation are provided below.
The research notes section features research-oriented ideas and thematic comments. The maximum length is 7,000–20,000 characters (incl. spaces and references).
The perspectives section features opinions, questions, book reviews, seminar and conference reports, interviews and news about upcoming events and publications. The maximum length is 10,000 characters (incl. spaces and references).
An introductory lecture is a short (10,000–15,000 characters and references) presentation of a dissertation, in an original or slightly modified (e.g. titled) version.
Manuscript Layout
All manuscripts must be prepared according to the following guidelines:
- Max. two subheading levels: first-level heading in bold, second-level heading in italics.
- Font: 12-point Times New Roman.
- Spacing: 1.5.
- Margins: 2½ cm.
- Paragraphs are separated by an empty line.
- The right-hand margin is ragged, no hyphenation.
- Work titles, highlighted words and foreign words are italicised.
- Images, charts and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points.
Wherever possible, charts and graphs should be designed in such a way that they do not require redrawing during layout (e.g. by using the chart tool in Word or PowerPoint).
Referencing
Literature references and the list of references must follow the APA guidelines (APA Style 7th Edition).
Language and Revision
The texts can be written in Finnish, Swedish or English. The author is responsible for the grammatical correctness of the text. Authors writing in a language other than their native tongue are required to submit the text for proofreading either to an academic proofreader or to an online proofreading service (e.g. https://www.proof-reading-service.com/en, https://www.scribendi.com/service/academic_proofreading; https://www.editage.com/editing-services/journal-article-editing-and-proofreading-services.html). Proofreading is carried out on manuscripts that have been reviewed and accepted. However, the version submitted for review should already be as linguistically correct as possible.
The English versions of abstracts must also be submitted for proofreading.
Copyright
The author retains the copyright to the work, but the original publication right belongs to the Finnish Journal of Tourism Research. The author may not publish an accepted article until it has been published in the Finnish Journal of Tourism Research at www.journal.fi.
A publishing contract will be issued for each article published in the journal.

Articles
An article (original article, research article) is based on research that provides new information. The maximum length for articles is 55,000 characters (incl. spaces). All articles and review articles are evaluated by a double-blinded peer review process.
Each article must include an abstract (max. 250 words) and a maximum of five keywords. The title must also be in English. The abstract must include the following sections (see L. Carroll: How to Write an Abstract: Tips and Samples):
- Motivation/problem statement: Why do we care about the problem? What practical, scientific or theoretical gap is your research filling?
- Methods/procedure: What did you actually do to obtain your results?
- Results/findings: As a result of completing the above procedure, what did you learn/invent?
- Conclusion/implications: What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the problem/gap identified in step 1?
All manuscripts must be anonymised, that is, modified so that the reviewers cannot determine the identity of the author based on the text or the list of references. All direct references to the author(s) must be removed from the text (reference may be made to “Author, 2019” if necessary). Any other information that might reveal the identity of the author must also be removed. The text file must also be anonymised by removing any personal information or hidden data, see instructions here.

Review Articles

Research Notes
The Research Notes section features research-oriented opinions and thematic comments. The maximum length is 7,000–20,000 characters (incl. spaces).
Research note should contain a short summary (max 5 sentences). Please place it in the Abstract section during submission.
Research Notes are evaluated by an open peer review process. According to the publication type classification of the Ministry of Education and Culture, these belong to publication type B1.

Perspectives
The Perspectives section features more informal ideas, questions and comments, book reviews, seminar and conference reports, interviews and news about upcoming events and publications. The maximum length is 10,000 characters (incl. spaces).

Introductory Lectures (Lectio praecursoria)
An introductory lecture is a short (10,000–15,000 characters) presentation of a dissertation, in an original or slightly modified (e.g. titled) version.

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement of Finnish Journal of Tourism Research
Finnish Journal of Tourism Research (hereinafter referred to as "FJTR") is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in the process of publishing original and innovative research in the field of tourism studies. FJTR adheres to the ethical guidelines and best practices put forth by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK (www.tenk.fi)
This combined and expanded Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement outlines the responsibilities and expectations of all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher. The statement includes detailed information on FJTR's policies regarding authorship and contributorship, complaints and appeals, conflicts of interest, data sharing and reproducibility, ethical oversight, intellectual property, and post-publication discussions and corrections.
Responsibilities of Authors
1.1 Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that their manuscripts are original works and do not contain any plagiarized content. Authors should properly acknowledge the work of others and cite all relevant sources of information.
1.2 Data Accuracy
Authors must have accurate and reliable data to support their research findings. Any fabrication or manipulation of data is strictly prohibited.
1.3 Multiple or Concurrent Submissions
Authors must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently. Any manuscript found to be submitted to multiple journals will be rejected.
1.4 Conflicts of Interest
Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation of their research findings.
1.5 Authorship and contributorship
All authors listed in the manuscript must have made a significant contribution to the research and are accountable for the content. Any changes to the authorship list must be approved by all authors and communicated to the editor. Individuals who do not meet the authorship criteria but have contributed to the research or manuscript preparation should be acknowledged in the "Acknowledgements" section of the manuscript.
1.6 Acknowledgement of Funding Sources
Authors should acknowledge any funding sources that supported their research.
1.7 Reporting of Errors and Corrections
Authors must report any errors or inaccuracies in their published work to the editor immediately upon discover and cooperate in making necessary corrections.
Responsibilities of Reviewers
2.1 Confidentiality
Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of manuscripts and not share or discuss them with third parties.
2.2 Objectivity
Reviewers must provide objective and unbiased evaluations of the manuscripts based on their merit, without any personal or professional conflicts of interest.
2.3 Timeliness
Reviewers must complete their evaluations within the specified time frame and inform the editor if they are unable to do so.
2.4 Reporting of Ethical Concerns
Reviewers should report any ethical concerns or suspected misconduct to the editor.
Responsibilities of Editors
3.1 Fair and Unbiased Evaluation
Editors must ensure that all manuscripts are evaluated based on their academic merit, without any discrimination or bias.
3.2 Confidentiality
Editors must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and only share them with reviewers and editorial board members involved in the evaluation process.
3.3 Conflict of Interest
Editors must disclose any conflicts of interest and recuse themselves from the editorial process if necessary.
3.4 Timeliness
Editors must strive to ensure a timely and efficient review process.
3.5 Decisions on Publication
Editors have the final responsibility for deciding whether a manuscript is accepted for publication, based on the reviewers' evaluations and FJTR's editorial policies.
3.6 Handling of Misconduct
Editors must investigate any allegations of misconduct and take appropriate actions, following the TENK guidelines.

4.1 Support for Editorial Independence
The publisher must support the editorial independence of FJTR and ensure that the editors have full authority to make decisions on publication.
4.2 Ethical Oversight
The publisher must work with the editors to address any ethical concerns and take appropriate actions.
4.3 Access and Archiving
The publisher must ensure that FJTR's published content is easily accessible and securely archived for long-term preservation.
4.4 Compliance with Best Practices
The publisher must adhere to the best practices in scholarly publishing, promoting integrity, transparency, and quality in tourism research.
Handling Complaints and Appeals
5.1 Complaints Procedure
FJTR is committed to addressing any complaints related to the publication process promptly and professionally. Complaints may be submitted to the editor-in-chief or managing editor via email. All complaints will be acknowledged, investigated thoroughly, and resolved in a timely manner, following the TENK guidelines. Complaints about editors may be submitted to the president of the Finnish Society of Tourism Research.
5.2 Appeals Process
Authors who disagree with the editorial decision on their manuscript may submit an appeal to the editor-in-chief. The appeal must include a detailed explanation of the reasons for the disagreement. The editor-in-chief will review the appeal, consult with relevant parties, and make a final decision.
Journal Policies on Conflicts of Interest / Competing Interests
6.1 Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest
Authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation, evaluation, or presentation of research findings. Conflicts of interest include financial, personal, or professional relationships that may affect the impartiality of the parties involved.
6.2 Management of Conflicts of Interest
FJTR will assess disclosed conflicts of interest and take appropriate actions to ensure that the publication process remains unbiased and transparent. This may include assigning a different reviewer, seeking external advice, or publishing a disclosure statement alongside the article.
Journal Policies on Data Sharing and Reproducibility
7.1 Data Availability
Authors are encouraged to make their research data publicly available, whenever possible, to enhance the transparency and reproducibility of their findings. This may include raw data, processed data, or other materials that support the conclusions of the research.
7.2 Data Citation
Authors should properly cite any data sets used in their research, following the appropriate citation guidelines and data repositories' requirements.
7.3 Reproducibility
FJTR supports the replication and verification of research findings by encouraging authors to provide sufficient methodological details and, when applicable, making their data and materials available.
Journal’s Policy on Ethical Oversight
8.1 Ethical Approval
For research involving children, animals, or sensitive data, authors must obtain ethical approval from relevant institutional review boards or ethics committees. The manuscript should include a statement confirming that ethical approval was obtained and that the research adheres to the relevant guidelines.
8.2 Informed Consent
When applicable, authors must obtain informed consent from the participants involved in the study. In cases where participants are unable to provide informed consent, authors should ensure that an appropriate proxy has provided consent on their behalf.
8.3 Protection of Privacy and Confidentiality
Authors must ensure that they protect the privacy and confidentiality of research participants by anonymizing any identifiable information and following appropriate data protection regulations.
8.4 Research Integrity
FJTR is committed to promoting research integrity and will investigate any allegations of misconduct or ethical concerns, following the TENK guidelines.
