Abstract

Second home tourism holds a significant place in Finnish leisure and recreation. Finland boasts over half a million second homes with up to 2,4 million Finns spending time in a second home annually. This review paper focuses on Finnish second home research over the last few decades. In addition to second home publications, the review draws on accumulated personal experiences from multiple research projects during the past twenty years. It also incorporates insights gained from national and international events, research exchanges, media interviews, as well as participation in regional and national-level development work and research to support decision-making. After a brief historical overview of second home research, the paper presents the research during the last two decades, some of the most important researchers and research groups. Next, it outlines the impact of the most recent global crises on second home research. The conclusion discusses the role of tourism perspectives in second home research and proposes suggestions for future research needs.
