Abstract

How do tourists get experiences? Observations of tourists’ acting principles in internet discussion groups

During the last decade, experiences seem to have become more and more central in the Finnish society. The aim of this article is to study the principles Finnish tourists follow to get experiences. The data of the study consist of 273 messages travelling Finns have sent to four discussion groups on the internet. The messages are analysed by a dialogic close reading that shifts between discourse analysis and narrative approach and draws from the theory of the experience society by Gerhard Schulze. The study results indicate that Finnish tourists aim to optimise the quality and quantity of their experiences by following various experience theories and principles, such as getting as many experiences as possible for the least possible amount of money or time. The article ends with a discussion of the implications of the results.
