Abstract

Estimating local economic effects of tourism – a combination of methods. The case of Savonlinna district

There is no unambiguous way to measure the economic impacts of tourism in a local level. The aim of this paper is to test a combination of three different methods to evaluate the economic effects of tourism. We have combined the Nordic model, input-output methodology and tourism satellite account to estimate the direct and indirect effects of tourism in Savonlinna district. To estimate the direct income of tourism, we first made in accordance with the Nordic model interviews and inquiries of tourist. Second, we compared the calculation to direct income based on regional satellite tourism accounts and regional national accounts. Third we made input-output tables to Savonlinna district and calculated indirect effects of income and employment using the production-consumption input-output model. The results indicate that this kind of mixed method could be a suitable way to estimate the economic impacts of tourism in local and regional economy.
