Multimodal transcription in conversation analysis

In this paper we discuss conversation analytic transcription. We begin by outlining the theoretical perspective and conceptual principles of conversation Aanalysis and their relationship to the presentation of research data in transcripts. Then we move on to a relatively recent practice within conversation analysis, the multimodal transcription of interaction on the basis of video data. We present in detail the multimodal transcription system developed by Lorenza Mondada, which is becoming widely used in studies that investigate the multimodality of talk-in-interaction. With a data extract, we illustrate the use of the transcription conventions and their significance in the analysis of the interaction. In doing this, we combine two separate but intertwined viewpoints: how the notation is made and what analytical issues are raised by it.
