Abstract

This article deals with two definitions of ideology: doctrine and myth. These two definitions establish a twin bases of legitimacy, the national myth and ideological orthodoxy, both arguably present in contemporary Chinese Communism. Facing the prospects of ”de-ideologization” and hence problems in legitimatization of the power, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been active in promoting a new image of the Great Helmsman, Mao Zedong, since the early 1990s. At the very same time, theoretical aspects of Maoism have been in crisis, resulting updates in the official ideology. Less and less bound to Mao Zedong Thought (mao zedong sixiang), CCP has, in fact, separated two different interpretations of Mao Zedong: ideological system (doctrine) and great narration (myth).
