Abstract

The expansion of Finnish higher education system has been palpable. Its core, the academic profession, has also faced consequential changes. The definition of Academic profession has become more difficult and it has been done often by referring academic workforce towards administration and changes in environment. Thus, the internal tensions have become elusive factors. Yet, when defining the profession we should be exact to avoid too broad generalisations.Personnel in polytechnic sector do not have the same opportunity to use professional power as university respondents. Nonetheless, university sector is also divided in means of professional power. It could be assumed that new vocation of researcher will evolve parallel to academic career. Article is based on Changing Academic Professionsurvey that was conducted in Finland in 2007 and 2008. The Finnish survey is a part of the international comparative study. The Survey data is a representing a sample of full-time academic staff of Finnish higher education.
