Abstrakti

International cooperation, integration and transnational regionalization in the Northern Calotte Region have been analyzed in a very elegant fashion on the one hand with a relatively light theoretical apparatus and on the other with apparatuses utilizing the approaches of new regionalism. Even though this article has been strongly influenced both these studies, the problem of lack of integration into the more traditional integration theories can be seen as a problem which has motivated the writing of the present article. It would appear that the integration of the old theory of integration together with insights into more recent discussions of new regionalism have something to offer to the analysis of a region, the Northern Calotte, which in many respects differs from many other areas (peripherality, low population density, long distances) and yet has many features in common with the experiences of integration which have been theorized earlier. The aim of this article is to take a comprehensive look at the transnational interaction patterns of the Northern Calotte in the light of perspectives offered by an integrated theoretical approach.
