Abstrakti

This year the world is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The same year Germany is celebrating the opening of the national Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, so called Holocaust Memorial, which has caused a lot of controversy and discussion over many years. This article deals with the question why Germany needs this Memorial. It draws attention to the concepts of memory and politics and shows that the commemoration is an active process. The aim of the article is to show that the erection of the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is not only an innocent act with which Germany honours the memory of the murdered Jews but it is also an act that constructs the identity of the unified Germany in the 21st century.
