Abstract

This article discusses the rhetorical culture of the Finnish Parliament on the basis of four rhetorical traditions that have shaped Western parliamentary culture. Here these traditions are named as classical, canonical, theatrical and rational-legal styles of speech. Finnish parliamentarians have also utilized these rhetorical traditions in Plenary Session debates. Plenary Session speeches from 1907 to 1995 are analyzed, providing rich historical evidence of how parliamentarian rhetorical styles have been utilized by Finnish MPs in various political situations.
