Abstract

This paper describes a method titled “ilmiöpöytä” to promote the interaction between research and decision-making. Ilmiöpöytä is an innovative science communication method for understanding of a complex phenomenon through a dialogue process. Itla organized three round table discussions, which focused on the connections between family background and education. Our goal was to synthesize available research around this complex phenomenon by combining expert information elicited from the round table discussions and systematic literature search. The paper at hand examines this process, the concept of dialogue and the opportunities and challenges of the ilmiöpöytä method, as well as its potential development points. We will discuss how researchers, professionals and decision-makers benefited from the dialogic process and how the phenomenon-based approach increased the exchange of information between researchers, practitioners and policymakers. The key findings of this case study are the desire expressed by professionals, decision-makers and researchers for an open and balanced dialogue instead of one-way messages.
