Abstract
In the field of language testing and assessment, questions relating to ethics and fairness have been under discussion and debate since they were explicitly raised in the 1990s. Focusing on social responsibility and equality in institutional standardized tests, this paper describes the two concepts and explores some of the discussion in the field since the emergence of the topic. Connecting ethics to other developments in the field and in particular to professionalism, the paper outlines some concerns of ethical assessment in standardized language tests.
