This article presents the results of research on how Swedish-speaking students learning Finnish as a foreign language at the beginners’ level use the frequent verbs tulla ‘come’ and mennä ‘go’ and what kind of rections (government) these verbs can have in the students’ writing. The research is corpus-based and quantitative. The results show that the students master the majority of the rections according to the rules but in some cases they choose a wrong local case, for example illative instead of allative or vice versa. The verbs, especially mennä, can also have MA-infinitive as rection. In a few cases the form of the infinitive is not correctly produced. Furthermore, thestudents have constructed clauses in which the rection demands the translative case. However, almost half of such clauses are unsuccessful.
