Abstract

The Cost of Calling: How Antero Viinikainen’s Orgo and Kreetta Onkeli’s Kutsumus Reflect the Finnish Publishing Culture

Current Finnish literary culture has confronted many changes affecting the role of the author to a great extent. These include the globalization and commercialization of the publishing industry, the increasing influence of media in the marketing of literature, and profound changes in the reading culture. These changes have inspired a wide-ranging public discussion, and they have also become popular themes in contemporary Finnish literature.

The article examines two satires dealing with Finnish publishing culture, Antero Viinikainen’s Orgo (2009) and Kreetta Onkeli’s Kutsumus (2010). My discussion centres upon the tissue of how the relationship between the author, the media and the commercialized publishing culture is depicted in these novels. The article also addresses what kind of problems and fears concerning the role of the author the novels attempt to reveal by the means of satire. The method of analysis is contextual: The novels are interpreted as contributions to the public discussion concerning the state of the current Finnish literary culture.
