Orchestral repertoire in the conductor training of St Petersburg State Conservatory in 1979–2019 as experienced by Finnish alumni.
This article examines the orchestral repertoire used in the conductor training of St Petersburg State Conservatory during years 1979–2019 as experienced by the Finnish alumni of the conservatory. The material for this research consists of interviews with five conductors and the author's notes made during his conducting studies. This material is used to look into the pedagogical nature of the repertoire and its relationship to the canon of orchestral music, as well as the learning experiences of the Finnish alumni. Despite the fact that the interviewees studied at the conservatory at different times and with different teachers, there are similarities both in terms of the repertoire and experiences. The importance of Beethoven's and Tchaikovsky's works in the repertoire, the relatively large share of Russian repertoire, and the scarcity of modern repertoire emerges. The repertoire however correlates well with the repertoire preferred by Finnish orchestras, while providing a good basis for the development of conducting technique.
