Abstract

Abstract: This article examines people who served as intermediaries between Russians and Finns during wartime. These individuals often had roots on the both sides of the conflict, which sometimes aroused suspicion about their loyalty. In addition, their ethnic background, on the one hand, and their military commitment, on the other, might have caused confusion regarding their loyalty. This article follows the movement of Finns and Russians between both countries from the times when Finland was part of the Russian Empire to the Second World War. Special attention is given to the loyalty of these people in situations where ethnically related individuals were fighting on ideologically different sides. The study’s data include historical research and memoirs of former prisoners of war.
