Abstract

of developmental stuttering on their lives. Previous studies have used interviews, surveys, and clinical
assessments, but no Finnish research has been conducted of this subject before. Based on international
studies, developmental stuttering can be expected to have a holistic impact on the life and daily life of
adults who stutter.
This study was a multi-case study, where video and audio material were collected through a
semi-structured thematic interview in the form of a group discussion. The material was analyzed using
qualitative theory-based content analysis, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability
and Health (ICF) as a reference framework.
Developmental stuttering affected the subjects’ lives even in adulthood. In the subjects’ narratives,
the connection between developmental stuttering and mental functions was especially emphasized.
Subjects reported the effects of stuttering on self-experience, describing the experience through self-image
and emotions. In addition, subjects described their experiences of the effects of developmental stuttering
on performance and participation, with an emphasis on interpersonal interaction and interpersonal
relationships as well as different areas of life. Based on the interviews, the communication partner
and communication style were related to subjects’ communication experience, and stuttering was felt to
have affected their studies and working life.
The results of this study showed that the psychosocial harm caused by developmental stuttering in
adulthood may be significant. Research increases understanding of the longitudinal effects of developmental
stuttering. The research gives speech therapists new perspectives to the rehabilitation of developmental
stuttering, as the research highlights the client’s experience.
