Although the conditions of the economy and work are changing in the sustainability transformation, sustainable working life is understood to take place mainly in paid employment. This article expands the understanding of work and livelihoods, and considers the already existing, but often hidden, socially and ecologically more sustainable work beyond wage labour, i.e. transformative work. I explore solutions that aim to ensure sustainable livelihoods for communities within the existing systems, although these systems may not support sustainable local livelihoods beyond wage employment. As theoretical and conceptual frameworks I apply research on responsible careers, diverse economies, institutional ethnography, and practice research. I present findings from 23 interviews with 19 transformative workers. I answer the questions of what, why and how transformative workers operate in their everyday lives and who they become as part of their work, and what might work that fits the planetary boundaries look like.
