Abstract

From the mid-19th century onwards, a distinctive readers' letter culture developed in the Finnish-language press, in which people from different layers of society wrote letters to the newspapers in the name of their own localities. The Translocalis Database, published as part of the Digital Collections of the National Library of Finland in February 2023, includes all these letters until the year 1885 (72,000). The database offers new opportunities for labour history, because it includes hundreds of letters written by the representatives of the working population. The database can be used to study the early emergence of worker identity in Finland as a social phenomenon before the breakthrough of socialism.
