All dressed up - or in Lindn's shoes?

Eeva Lindn (1963 [1954]) recommended replacing the past participle pukeutunut 'clothed, dressed' by local case expressions (pukeissa, vaatteissa 'in clothes' etc.), because the use of the participle to express a state was, she claimed, a borrowing from Swedish and therefore to be avoided. The present article discusses the conditions governing the use of a local case to express a state, within the framework of modern linguistics. Three issues emerge: (1) the status of this use of the participle with respect to the process of grammaticalization; (2) imagery as a factor influencing semanto-syntactic variation; and (3) the contextual environment of local-case expressions of state, in the light of corpus studies. Underlying themes are the general approach to meaning at different periods, and the question of whether linguistics can be said to progress or not. An examination of the data shows that the different forms of expression are functionally differentiated according to grammatical construction and motivation. From the viewpoint of imagery, the various usages seem motivated. A study of the contextual conditions of occurrence gives rise to some criticism of the views held by some language-planners that only one primary form of expression should be used to express a particular concept. Expressions of state need a more detailed analysis.
