In this article I’m examining the activities of a German art historian Gustav Pauli and his activities in Finland during the 1920´s. In the following pages I will discuss the meaning and the purpose of the Great Exhibition of German Art in the Ateneum Art Museum in 1922, the conservation of the Kalanti Altarpiece during 1922-1925 and the plans to arrange a Finnish art exhibition in Germany later in the 1927, in which Pauli played a major part. As a material I’m using the correspondence that Pauli had with the Finnish officials as well as with the German envoys in Helsinki. The insights that we get from the writings of Pauli open a hole new view to Finland as a nation and cultural entity, seen through a foreigner. My aim is to reveal and emphasize the contribution that Pauli had to the relationships between Finland and Germany during the turbulent and fascinating years between the world wars.
